Who we are

All editing projects are facilitated by iō Literary Journal's founding editors, who each brings her commitment to the craft to guide your work to its next level.

Crystal Bonano

Picture
As an editor, Crystal strives to help creatives of all backgrounds see their artistic hopes to fruition. Since co-founding iō Literary Journal in 2018, she has read and analyzed hundreds of submissions, edited both traditional genres and experimental writing, and collaborated with contributors to polish their work for publication while keeping to their creative vision and voice.

In addition to her work with iō, Crystal works as a freelance developmental and copy editor assisting diverse authors one-on-one with completing their novels and traversing the agent querying process. She also freelances as a research assistant tasked with editing and revising grant applications, presentation materials, and social science articles for publication.

Crystal gained her initial experience as an English major at the University of South Florida, where she edited fiction, nonfiction, literary criticism, and poetry for the undergraduate literary journal, thread, Literary Inquiry. Her work as a research assistant transcribing, translating, and editing work in English, Spanish, German, and French sparked an interest in linguistics and cultures and led to a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language in 2019.

Crystal aims to give writers a positive editing and publishing experience as well as open dialogue on how to further improve representation within the writing community.

Isabelle Cavazos

Isabelle’s mission as an editor is to hold space for marginalized writers in creative and academic environments and honor their authentic voices, regardless of experience, training, or background.

As a founding editor of iō Literary Journal, Isabelle has worked closely with contributors to copyedit works across genres published in io’s three print volumes, its online publication, Refractions, and its open-access ebook, Tales from Six Feet Apart. In addition to highlighting works by writers of all backgrounds in iō, Isabelle holds a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has served culturally and linguistically diverse writers as an ESL and academic writing instructor and in writing centers.

Prior to this experience, she has performed freelance developmental and copyediting services for a nonfiction publication, copyedited and managed the opinion section for The Oracle, the University of South Florida’s (USF) independent, student-run newspaper, and served as the managing editor for thread, Literary Inquiry, USF’s undergraduate literary journal.

Going forward, Isabelle aims to bring forth her expertise working with novice and second-language writers to grow your writing project to its next stage while upholding your creative vision in the process.

Laura has also done freelance developmental editing and copyediting for fiction manuscripts and line editing for technical and professional reports.

Laura obtained her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of South Florida. Through the Literary Studies concentration, Laura is specialized in evaluating and critiquing different literary methods and works, including multi-ethnic literatures like US Latino/a Literatures.
